| MISSION STATEMENT
' To create an enriched and effective English language learning and teaching
environment in local primary schools through the implementation of curriculum
reform, professional development of teachers and adoption of innovative
learning and teaching practices.'
BACKGROUND OF THE PNET SCHEME
In 1997,native English-speaking teachers (NETs) were introduced to secondary
schools and in 2002 NETs were introduced in primary schools to support
English learning and teaching. There is evidence that NETs bring in a
variety of teaching strategies and enrich the school language environment.
Under the Primary NET scheme, one NET is allocated to 2 primary schools
operating 6 classes or more. In the 2003/ 2004 school year, all primary
schools will receive a NET serving in 2 schools on alternate weeks.
OBJECTlVES OF THE SCHEME
- Provide an authentic environment for children to learn English;
- develop children's interest and confidence in learning English; and
- support local teachers to develop innovative learning and teaching
methods, produce materials, organize English language activities and
develop school-based curriculum.
ROLE OF THE NETS
- Co-plan and co-teach with local teachers;
- contribute to curricular and professional development; and
- advise on and develop teaching resources.
HOW DOES THE NET SUPPORT ENGLISH LEARNING
AND TEACHING IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL?
- Co-teaches with local teachers in some classes;
- creates an authentic English learning environment;
- incorporates innovative teaching strategies by using a variety of
resources;
- supports and develops opportunities for children in the school to
practise their English; and
- provides support to the English Panel in professional development.
HOW CAN PARENTS SUPPORT THEIR CHlLD lN LEARNlNG
ENGLISH?
- Increase exposure to English outside of school;
- encourage their child to read in English;
- encourage their child to listen to English though a range of media;
and
- attend parent workshops if available.
